The exhibition
The educational exhibition Let Me Be Myself – The Life Story of Anne Frank tells the story of Anne Frank and the Holocaust and challenges visitors to consider more general issues such as identity, prejudice and discrimination.
Historical Content
The historical part of the “Let Me Be Myself” exhibition helps visitors identify with Anne Frank’s personal story. Large-scale photographs depict Anna’s happy early childhood in Frankfurt, and then the family’s migration to Amsterdam.
In a sequential manner, the exhibition connects the personal history of the Frank family with the important historical events of the time: the rise of the Nazis, Germany’s isolation and discrimination against the Jewish population, culminating in the Holocaust.
Some sections of the exhibition contain images of the house in the center of Amsterdam where the Frank family hid for more than two years. These sections also contain pictures and texts about the outside world of that time: they show the Netherlands under Nazi occupation, the deportations and the concentration camps.
Anne Frank today
The contemporary section of the exhibition includes stories of young people today. It explores four general themes drawn from the story of Anne Frank:
• Identity: how do we perceive our own identity? Is it different from how others perceive us?
• Individuals as group members: which group do we belong to? How do others describe us?
• Discrimination? What happens when others don’t accept us?
• Response: What can we do against discrimination?
